This blended learning seminar “Business use of patent information” is designed to help the staff of patent offices and PATLIB centres to provide patent information-related services to their customers in their daily routine.

The seminar follows a process-oriented approach, ranging from understanding customer needs to analysing and communicating the results of the analysis.

This distance learning course is offered to patent examiners at national IP offices. Participants will learn the basics of identifying the relevant parts of a patent application for search, they will learn how to build up an appropriate search strategy and coming to terms with the results received. Virtual classroom sessions allow for direct interaction with expert tutors from the European Patent Office. Respective tool training will not form part of this course.

Level of expertise: Entry level

This distance learning course is offered to patent examiners at national IP offices who have started to use the EPOQUE Net tool. The course comprises on-line material, such as e-learning modules and will be articulated around a series of 6 virtual classroom (VC) sessions. The course has a focus on the hands-on experience, translated in the form of assignments, exercises and examples. The material will help EPOQUE Net users at national offices to efficiently perform searches using EPOQUE Net. The tutors are experienced EPO examiners.

During the VC sessions, participants have the possibility to communicate live with the experts and ask questions.

Level of expertise: Intermediate

This distance learning course is offered to patent examiners at national IP offices and comprises a series of ten virtual classroom (VC) sessions on the use of EPOQUE Net. The VC sessions are live and scheduled on Wednesdays once a month. They will help to broaden skills of EPOQUE Net users at national offices. Practical cases will be provided as short assignments prior to each VC. Solution(s) proposed by participants and the tutor(s) will be therein discussed. Tips and tricks on efficient use of the EPO's professional patent search tool will be brought to participants. Features of possible new roll-outs will also be included in the course.

This distance learning course is offered to patent examiners of national IP offices, in particular those in charge of drafting communications on the merits of a patent application with respect to patentability requirements. Participants will broaden their skills in preparing the written search opinion accompanying a search report according to EPO Guidelines. Training will consist of on-line modules, tests and assignments; live virtual classroom sessions allow for direct interaction with expert tutors from the European Patent Office.

Level of expertise: Advanced level

This distance learning course is offered to patent examiners at national IP offices. Participants will learn to assess novelty and inventive step in line with the EPO practice (Guidelines and Case Law). Virtual classroom sessions allow for direct interaction with expert tutors from the European Patent Office.

Level of expertise: Intermediate level

This distance learning course is offered to patent examiners of national IP offices. Participants will learn in a comprehensive format about the opposition procedure at the EPO. The training is composed of an e-learning module and virtual classroom sessions that will deepen the concepts provided by way of examples and practical cases.

Level of expertise: Advanced

This course is available to the group of interviewers realising the EPO User Satisfaction Survey and provides an overview of the EPO and the granting procedure.
